Good masters! Sweet Ladies! by Laura Amy Schlitz, illustrated by Robert Byrd
Voices from a medieval village. This book won a Newberry award for its distinguished contribution to American children's literature. Laura May Schlitz brings this historic period to life through the stories of villagers. She includes people from all sectors of society. We meet Jacob the moneylender's son and learn about his his encounter with Petronella the merchant's daughter. We find out how children and youth lived and worked in the medieval period. This book reminds me of Karen Cushman's wonderful medieval novels . I highly recommend Good Masters !Sweet Ladies!

What I love most about this book is that it provides numerous ways for teens to connect with a time period that would normally be quite unrelatable. These individual characters are experiencing the same difficulties that modern teens do; dating, bullying, abusive parents, self-esteem, etc. Because students will be able to relate to the conflicts in this book, it should be easier for them to adopt the point of view of the characters; go back in time, if you will, to live as a Medieval teenager.
Hopefully by having my students adopt one of these characters and interact with each other, the middle ages will come alive for them. Just as a visit to Kings Landing or other historical settlement makes history more exciting, so too can this text excite students about Medieval times and Medieval literature.
